Lakers Pay Tribute to Staples Center with Game-Long Tribute
Ending an Era: Lakers Bid Farewell to Staples Center During Spurs Game
A Memorable Night at the Former Home Court
On December 23, 2021, during their game against the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers honored the former name of their home arena, Staples Center. The arena commemorated the occasion with a special tribute throughout the game, distributing T-shirts and printed memorabilia to Lakers fans.
Staples Center served as the home venue for the Lakers and Clippers from 1999 to 2021. However, following Thursday's game, the arena officially ended its run as the teams' home court. The naming rights to the venue had been purchased by Staples, an office supply retailer, in 1999 for $116 million over a 20-year period.
According to ESPN and other media outlets, Staples Center will receive a new name for Christmas. The downtown Los Angeles venue, also home to the Clippers, Kings, and Sparks, will bear a new identity as it enters a new chapter in its history.
