Despite this, the Mavericks' decision to let Brunson walk in free agency might have been a strategic error.
Extending Brunson's contract would have potentially hindered the Mavericks' flexibility in acquiring a star player through a trade. By not doing so, they have kept their options open to pursue a blockbuster deal if one becomes available.
