Millions Without Power as Storm Slams Gulf Coast

Hurricane Beryl has made landfall near Matagorda, Texas, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, according to the US National Hurricane Center. It is the first hurricane to make landfall in the state since Hurricane Nicholas in 2021.

The storm has knocked out power to more than 27 million customers in Texas. CenterPoint Energy, one of the major providers in the state, expects to restore power to 1 million customers by the end of Wednesday.

Beryl, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, is expected to regain hurricane strength before hitting the south Texas coast late Sunday or early Monday.
