Braves Bolster Infield Depth
The Atlanta Braves have signed veteran infielder Gio Urshela to a one-year contract after losing third baseman Austin Riley to a knee injury. Urshela has played in 92 games for the Detroit Tigers this season, batting .243 with 73 OPS, five homers, and 37 RBIs.
Urshela's History
Urshela, 31, has a career .279 batting average with 79 homers and 351 RBIs in seven seasons with the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Tigers. He has been a Gold Glove finalist at third base twice in his career.
Braves' Infield Options
The Braves have several options to fill the void at third base with Riley out.
- Vaughn Grissom, who is currently playing at Triple-A Gwinnett
- Orlando Arcia, who has started at shortstop in Riley's absence
- Johan Camargo, who has been playing second base
The Braves are also reportedly working out Yuli Gurriel at third in the minors as another option.
Riley's Injury
Riley, 26, is expected to miss at least a month with a sprained right knee. He was injured in the Braves' 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.
The Braves are currently in first place in the National League East with a 64-48 record.
